How to Prevent and Prepare for Diaper Blowouts

Diaper blowouts are bound to happen from time to time, but shouldn’t be a daily occurrence.  From experience, they seem to happen even more for breastfed babies. And while diaper blowouts cannot be 100% prevented there are things you can do to lessen the blow. See what I did there?

Use a Cloth Diaper Cover

Cloth diapers aren’t just for use with cloth diapers, they can be used over disposable diapers too.  The cloth diaper cover – ones with back and leg gussets – helps to trap diaper explosions, holding in the mess and not messing up you or the baby’s clothes.

Use the Correct Diaper Size

When diapers do not properly fit the baby, they tend to cause a blowout.  You want a diaper that isn’t fully snug because the mess needs to have somewhere to go when your baby does his/her business.  If the diaper straps/flaps don’t fit closely together, you should move up a size in the diaper. Also, the diaper leg cuffs, you know the frilly-ish area near the legs of the diaper, those should be untucked. Check to ensure they are untucked after every diaper change.

Know Your Baby’s ‘Gotta Go’ Cues

Some baby’s poop right after feeds some before. Regardless of when they go, they give tell-tale signs like grunting or flexing.  Whatever it is, know it so that in the future, you know what to look for so you can ensure your baby isn’t lying on their back or sitting on their butts.  Either position can lead to a major diaper blowout. That’s why blowouts in car seats are most common.

Be Prepared for a Diaper Blowout While On-the-go

Just the other day, I made a rookie mom mistake: I left the house without a change of clothes for the baby. Take my advice, ALWAYS make sure that when you leave the house you bring extra clothes with you for your baby. For yourself, too just in case some of the poop gets on you. You will also want to pack a wet/dry bag and wipes to make cleanup of any messes easier as well as the transport of soiled clothes back home a breeze.
