It’s been a while – like nearly three years – since we’ve taken a vacation. With a flight that’s just under 2 hours from New York City, Charleston, SC was the perfect place to dip our feet back into the travel scene. Aside from the short flight time, Charleston, SC is known for its history, food scene, and southern charm. Having experienced this charming town as a child, I wanted to revisit it with my family. Knowing this, my husband surprised me with this trip for my birthday. The Hotel Bennett, the No. 1 luxury hotel in Charleston, was where we spent four nights enjoying what we could of our time there. Hint: it included a lot of good food, drinks, and fun memories.

A Grand Hotel for a Grand Birthday

My husband hit the ball right out of the park when choosing this hotel. The grand entry is awe-inspiring with Southern touches like a swooping staircase, a muralled rotunda, and a large, airy, columned foyer that merges into the hotel’s lounge bar. The petal-like chandelier and the over-the-top flower arrangements screamed luxury. I knew we were in for an amazing stay to celebrate my 38th birthday.

Our hotel room

The room was stunning and impeccably clean. It was a spacious modern-traditional room with a Juliette balcony offering a view of Virginia’s Restaurant and bar, named after Michael Bennett’s mother. There were two plush queen beds with white bedding and gold-trimmed pillowcases, glass lamps, and bookshelves featuring titles from the former Charleston Library where the hotel currently sits. If tech is your thing, you’ll be impressed by the lighting and drapery, which is controlled by the remote or wall panel. It felt good to not have to draw curtains manually over our four-night stay.

In-room amenities include:

  • Air Conditioning
  • Hair Dryer
  • Safe
  • Mini bar
  • Iron and ironing boards
  • Flat-Screen television
  • Nespresso coffee maker
  • Mini Refrigerator
  • Turndown service with chocolate

The bathroom

The large bathroom is to the right as soon as you enter the room. It offers privacy through its double pocket doors and a toilet room, which is needed when you’re traveling as a family. I loved the double sink and large shower with dual shower heads. It was perfect for showering my toddler. I’ve always wanted a large soaker tub like the one here. It was luxurious.

The hotel provided a satchel of verbena-scented sea salts to soak your worries away or relax at the end of the day of walking around Downtown. Although I didn’t get to enjoy the tub, the kids played in it for hours.

Dining at Hotel Bennett

While the hotel has on-site dining options, like Gabrielle, where you can experience fine dining with indoor or outdoor seating, we chose to eat elsewhere. However, in the morning before heading out for the day, my husband would pick up fresh pastries and coffee from the hotel’s Patisserie. The rooftop bar, Fiat Lux, which is near the pool, serves Mediterranean-style dishes, while the Camellia Champagne and Caviar Bar feature an extensive collection of bottle and by-the-glass offerings paired with a decadent selection of caviar, charcuterie, and local seafood.
