The other night I attended an advance screening of Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. I am so happy to have gotten the chance to see it with my mini-me and her friend, especially since it was on my list of upcoming Disney movies that we are excited about. The opportunity to see this movie was not going to be missed even if that meant I had to head to the movie theater only two hours after returning to New York from New Orleans. I was tired, but it was worth it.
Seven & Eight-Year-Old Girls on Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
My daughter and her friend enjoyed seeing the movie. When I asked these seven and eight-year-old girls what they thought, they said, “It was good!” Of course with little giggles. After asking which part of the movie was their favorite, they both said all of the parts with Mother Ginger. Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren) was one of their favorite characters and mine too.
Mom’s Perspective of The Nutcracker and The Four Realms
As a mom and adult, I, of course, noticed the messages in this family holiday movie. One that stuck out to me the most was being sensitive to other’s feelings amidst your own pain and suffering. This is a lesson both Clara and her father learned in the Nutcracker. Both are dealing with a great loss – the loss of a mother and wife. This loss will give Clara the courage to push through and get through some of the toughest moments while in the Realms.
Another lesson learned from the watching The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is that not everyone who is your friend is truly your friend and has your best intentions in mind. Just because something is sugarcoated does not make it sweet! You will see what I mean after you see the move.
Stay Past the Credits
I know, sometimes kids are antsy or you’re just tired of sitting in a seat for nearly two hours, but I promise you that staying past the credits it worth it. If you don’t you will miss out on a wonderful ballet performance by Misty Copeland. To be honest, her performances were some of my best scenes from the Nutcracker.
The Nutcrack and the Four Realms is in theaters November 2, 2018!

All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. Starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Disney’s new holiday feature film “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale.
