A Perfect Blend of Work and “Me” Time in Grand Rapids
My recent trip to Grand Rapids was a mix of work and some much-needed “me” time. I attended a conference that brought me to this vibrant city, but it quickly became a solo travel adventure that rejuvenated my spirit. Staying at the JW Marriott Grand Rapids, a 4-star hotel Downtown, made exploring the city a breeze. Its central location put me within walking distance of fantastic restaurants, shops, the Grand Rapids Art Museum, and the lively Grand Rapids Festival of the Arts. I found Grand Rapids surprisingly clean, with beautiful streets and a warm atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for solo travelers.

Festival Vibes: The Heartbeat of Grand Rapids
You can’t miss the Grand Rapids Festival of the Arts if you love music. The city transformed into a vibrant celebration of art and music during my stay. The streets were closed, allowing everyone to dive into the festival’s lively atmosphere. I strolled through food vendors, browsed local art, and listened to live music performances that ranged from jazz to rock. One highlight was a rock band covering “Peaches” by The Presidents of the United States of America—a nostalgic blast from the past that had me singing along like it was the ’90s again. Big Band of Praise, an 18-piece powerhouse group, also blew me away with their incredible mix of big band, swing, jazz, and blues. This festival is a must-see, offering a unique experience that captures the soul of Grand Rapids.
Cultural Exploration: Discovering Art in Grand Rapids
With some free time between conference sessions, I decided to explore the Grand Rapids Art Museum. Lucky for me, entry was free that day—likely to coincide with the festival. The museum itself is a stunning space, and I was particularly captivated by the Mario Moore exhibit.
This Michigan Artist Series exhibition featured large-scale paintings, silverpoint drawings, and works on paper that bridges America’s past and present, shedding light on often-overlooked stories in our collective history. Although I didn’t have my daughters with me, I noticed a LEGO building activity room for kids—a perfect spot for families visiting the museum. The Grand Rapids Children’s Museum, just a short walk away, is another excellent option for those traveling with little ones. Though I didn’t visit this time, it’s definitely on my list for the future when I return with my family.
Savoring Local Flavors: A Visit to Founder’s Brewery
As a self-proclaimed beer snob, discovering that one of my favorite breweries, Founder’s Brewing Co., was just a 15-minute walk from my hotel was a pleasant surprise. The taproom at Founder’s is massive, with indoor and outdoor seating. I chose to sit outside, enjoying the beautiful weather and the lively atmosphere.
The crowd was a mix of families, friends, and couples enjoying great beer and good company. I indulged in my favorite brews, Dirty Bastard and KBS Spicy Chocolate while savoring a Baked Cod sandwich and Cajun seared shrimp. While the food was decent, the beer made everything better. Of course, I couldn’t leave without grabbing some Founder’s gear for myself and my husband, and I even picked up some IPA Soap for my daughter—it smelled amazing!
I ventured to Tupelo Honey, a Southern-style restaurant five minutes from the JW Marriott, for breakfast. I opted for the Smoked Salmon Grit Cake & Eggs, a delicious dish satisfying and lighter than my usual choice of shrimp and grits. While the Blueberry Lavender Mimosa was a bit too sweet for my taste, the overall experience was enjoyable. However, with so many dining options in Grand Rapids, I’d recommend trying a different spot next time.
