Over the summer, I did something I haven’t done in years: I took a trip with two of my girlfriends. Before I had a family, we would take a girl’s trips pretty often. We spent five days in Nassau Bahamas, staying at the five-star rated SLS Baha Mar. Nassau Bahamas is best known for its white sandy beaches, culture, and food. Plus, it is only a few hour’s flights from New York, making it the perfect destination for a getaway. Should SLS Baha Mar be your next getaway destination? Keep reading.
Did you know?
There are 40 non-stop flights into Nassau Bahamas from New York area airports (JFK, LGA, and EWR)
Our Superior Queen Room at SLS Baha Mar
My friends in I spent our five days in a 358 square feet room with two Signature SLS queen-sized beds. The beds were super comfortable. As someone who prefers firm mattresses, this one, at first felt a bit too soft for my liking, but a quick nap after our flight proved me wrong. I got some of the best sleep and rest I’ve had in a while or could it have been that I wasn’t sharing my bed?
The step-out balcony was nice a nice touch; however, construction was going on so we had a view of that along with a view of the beach. The construction didn’t interfere with our stay, at least with the balcony doors closed we didn’t hear anything, and during the day we were out and about.
We spent very little time in the room, but if you need to have a TV, you’ll be happy to know there is a 42” television. I can’t tell you how many times we watched or what shows. That’s how useless it was during our stay.
Bathroom
The bathroom of the superior queen room at SLS was interesting, to say the least. If you need privacy, be warned that the only thing separating the hallway from the bathroom is an opaque curtain. The sink and shower are in the same space, with the actual toilet pushed to the back with a frosted door that doubles as a shower door. The room has a shower/tub combo; however, if you are pregnant like me or have issues lifting your legs up high, the tub itself is at least a foot or more off of the floor. The bathroom wasn’t the best but we made it work.
Dining at SLS Baha Mar
We dined a few times on the Baha Mar property during our stay. Even though it was mostly for breakfast, one thing is for sure it was expensive! Thank God I budgeted for this trip in advance so I was prepared.
Our first breakfast was had at Cleo Mediterraneo, which is done buffet style ($45/person). The food was pretty decent and even though it was buffet style, things were coming out fresh. You can even get an omelet, smoothie and other items made to order.
Thanks to one of our friends who gave us the heads up about breakfast at the Regata Buffet ($35/person) because it was so good! The food options were endless, and it was cheaper than Cleo. I loved that the leftover yogurt was used to make frozen yogurt pops, which were good. There is also a Starbucks on the property (Grand Hyatt side) and a cute French Bistro, Café Madeline (SLS side). Starbucks was pretty much a daily trip for us.
Two nights during our stay we had dinner on the Baha Mar property. The first dinner was at Costa, which was located on the Rosewood side of the Baha Mar property. Costa is a Bahamian-Mexican infusion restaurant. The food was okay, especially for the price. The best meal we had was during our last night, which was at Katsuya on the SLS property. The food was great and the staff was a lot more attentive than at Costa.
Listen, Baha Mar has food trucks on the beach! I got myself a burger from Umami Burger. They have an ice cream stand, a Mexican food truck, and more! The food at the trucks is a little less expensive than the sitdown restaurants.
Baha Mar properties are cashless
You either use a credit card or charge things to your room. The latter became an issue because somehow someone began charging drinks to our room. It took a bit of time to get it cleared up, but eventually, the hotel concierge fixed it so that nothing could be charged to our room at all. Remember, it’s cashless. When we were at the beach, certain food trucks and bars did not accept cards or cash; they were room charges only. That was a small issue we faced.
There’s So Much to do on the Baha Mar Property
The SLS Baha Mar has its own set of amenities like the Privilege Pool, Skybar rooftop lounge, Cleo restaurant and more. But because it sits on the Baha Mar property, guests of the SLS have access to all of the amenities at the Grand Hyatt and Rosewood properties.
There is a Vegas-style casino, numerous restaurants, luxury shops, beachside food trucks, The Sanctuary featuring a touch pool, Flamingo Cay, and even an Aviary. You can jump off of a cliff or take pictures in a grotto with a view of sea life at the Blue Hole Pool.
While SLS Baha Mar has earned its title as a “party resort”, and rightfully so, I would recommend it for a girlfriends getaway, bachelorette party or even for solo travel. However, if you prefer a more quiet, romantic, or even family-friendly environment then opt for a stay at either the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar or Rosewood Baha Mar. Either choice provides access to a variety of activities and things to see for both adults and kids to enjoy. Staying at SLS and walking around the Baha Mar property made me even consider a trip back with my daughter and husband. Additionally, I considered venturing back for a babymoon because there weren’t any mosquitoes.
