Three nights, one conference, and a hotel that reminded me why sometimes mixing business with a bit of luxury is exactly what this millennial mom needs.
My First Indianapolis Adventure
As someone who’s always been fascinated by cars (hello, fellow car enthusiasts!), I was genuinely excited when I learned my first trip to Indianapolis would coincide with being in the city that hosts the legendary Indy 500. The JW Marriott Indianapolis downtown served as my home base for a three-day work conference where I’d be presenting to 50 medical directors for the first time. Talk about nerve-wracking! But there’s something about staying at a luxury hotel that gives you that extra confidence boost, you know?
Conference organizers typically choose JW properties for their events, and I understand why. As a frequent traveler who treats business trips like mini vacations (especially when it means a king-sized bed all to myself), I was ready to embrace those precious moments of solitude that we Virgos desperately need to recharge.
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. The Pacers were battling OKC in the playoffs, and let me tell you, Pacers fans go hard! The energy in the city was electric, adding an unexpected layer of excitement to what could have been just another work trip.

First Impressions: Circle City Charm
Walking into the JW Marriott Indianapolis, I was immediately greeted by staff who made me feel like I mattered, not just another guest checking in. Despite arriving well before the standard 4 PM check-in time, my Gold Marriott Bonvoy status came in clutch. I’d also called ahead to request early check-in since I knew my early morning flight would have me there by midday.
The lobby exuded that signature JW elegance I’ve come to expect from the brand. Within less than 30 minutes of settling into a booth at the lobby bar with my laptop, I received that sweet call letting me know my room was ready. This kind of efficiency is exactly what you need when you’re trying to balance conference prep with the desire to actually enjoy your surroundings.
The downtown Indianapolis location immediately struck me as beautifully walkable with that classic city center hotel vibe. You could feel the energy of the Circle City buzzing around you, and I knew I was going to love exploring during my downtime.
Room 2813: My Conference Command Center
This 4-star hotel delivered exactly what I needed for productive conference days. Room 2813 on the 28th floor welcomed me with a layout that made perfect sense: closet space to the left, mini bar with fridge and coffee station, bathroom to the right, and a king bed with floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing downtown Indianapolis.
The workspace setup was ideal for answering emails and attending virtual meetings between conference sessions. Having a proper desk with WiFi and USB chargers meant I could stay connected without feeling cramped or unprofessional during video calls.
Can we talk about that bed for a moment? After years of sharing sleeping space with a five-year-old who somehow takes up 75% of a king-sized bed, having all that space to myself was pure heaven. My back thanked me every single morning. Conference days are exhausting enough without adding poor sleep quality to the mix.
The bathroom featured shower jets that spray your entire body. The water pressure was decent, and they provided plenty of towels (though they were a bit scratchy for my taste).
The Aromatherapy Associates products in the “Relax and Unwind” scent were a lovely lavender touch that helped me decompress after long conference days.
The bathroom lighting was not makeup-friendly. As someone who takes pride in having my makeup on point, especially for professional presentations, this was frustrating. Also, there was this oddly placed mirror right beside the bed that both my boss and I found completely impractical. Sometimes luxury hotels miss these simple functionality details that actually matter to guests.
Safety-wise, I felt secure. I always double-locked my door and kept the “Do Not Disturb” sign up.
Conference Perfect Amenities
Thank goodness the conference took place right in the hotel’s meeting spaces because when one of my shoes fell apart between sessions, I could dash up to the 28th floor for a quick change without missing important networking time.
I managed one gym visit during my stay, using the treadmill for a 30-minute Peloton walk with my favorite instructor, Jess Sims. The view of the Eiteljorg Museum from the fitness center was a pleasant surprise and made the workout feel less like a chore and more like sightseeing.
Dining: The Good, The Okay, and The Better Options
The continental breakfast provided for conference attendees was standard fare, nothing to write home about. Since I’m not a fan of hotel coffee, I relied heavily on the onsite Starbucks, though my Gold Marriott status did hook me up with free drip coffee from the hotel shop.
One evening, a vendor treated our group to dinner at High Velocity, the hotel’s onsite restaurant. Think bar food, but honestly, it was just okay. The Old-fashion cocktails, my favorite, were solid. As someone trying to eat healthier and following a pescatarian diet, the predominantly fried, meat-heavy, overly salty menu didn’t work for me.
My recommendation? Venture outside. Downtown Indianapolis has many dining options. We discovered Milktooth for brunch, a progressive farm-to-table spot that was worth the GPS adventure to find it. We also enjoyed dinner at Spoke & Steele inside the Le Meridien on our first night. The food there was just okay.
Location Gold Mine
The JW Marriott Indianapolis downtown location provided a nice home base for my three-night stay. Everything from the Indiana State Museum to the Eiteljorg Museum, Canal Walk, and NCAA Hall of Champions is within walking distance. My boss and I spent time walking the canal and exploring downtown between conference sessions, which felt like stolen vacation moments during a work trip.
The area is highly walkable, though Uber is readily available when you need it. For a car enthusiast like me, being able to get to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum easily was the cherry on top of an already great location.
The Beauty in the Bump: Finding Yourself in Business Travel
Sometimes the ‘bump’ in business travel is remembering you’re still a person with needs beyond spreadsheets and networking events.
Maintaining my self-care routine was non-negotiable, even during busy conference days. I packed my essential skincare products. I also brought my signature fragrances – Initio Musk Therapy and Byredo Black Saffron – because feeling like myself helps me perform better professionally.
The unexpected joy of this trip was getting to turn off “mom mode completely.” Having uninterrupted time to think (or not think), explore a new city at my own pace, and sleep through the night without little feet kicking me was exactly the reset I needed.
Being able to visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum as a car enthusiast was an incredible bonus that reminded me how business travel can feed different parts of your soul when you stay open to the possibilities.
Why I’ll Be Back
Would I stay at the JW Marriott Indianapolis again? Yes! The staff here were noticeably friendlier than my experience at the Grand Rapids location, ranking this property first, only to JW New Orleans in my book.
This hotel is perfect for business travelers who want luxury without sacrificing convenience, couples looking for a romantic downtown getaway, or families wanting to be in the heart of everything Indianapolis offers.
Next time, I’m definitely trying the spa and spending more time in that fitness center. The property offers so much more than I was able to experience during my three-day conference-focused stay.
