Picture this: You’re cruising down Montauk Highway in an electric SUV, kids happily entertained in the back, when suddenly your navigation sends you on a wild goose chase for a charging station that doesn’t exist. Sound familiar? Well, Rivian just changed the game.

Getting Reacquainted: My Rivian Family Adventure
Two months after my brief 30-minute test drive from The MET Cloisters to Rivian’s Meatpacking space, I found myself taking the LIRR into the city for the first time in six years to pick up the R1S for a week-long family test drive that would completely shift my perspective on electric vehicles.
The 2025 Rivian R1S Ascend Trim in Glacier White, paired with Black Mountain and Brown Ashwood interior, was stunning. I had to reacquaint myself with the mostly touchscreen everything and regenerative brake system, but once I did, it was smooth sailing. Well, mostly.
Rivian boasts compatibility with 50,000 DC fast chargers across North America, plus you can use Tesla chargers with the NACS DC adapter on 2025 models and older. The navigation system enables you to enter your destination, displaying the route and estimated time of arrival. Sounds perfect, right?

Here’s where things got interesting. On our way back from Philadelphia after seeing Josh Johnson perform, the navigation showed us charging stations that weren’t there when we arrived. This also happened when I needed to charge near home—cue range anxiety. As a Virgo who doesn’t like uncertainty, this gave me serious anxiety.
Thankfully, I remembered seeing a highway sign advertising EV charging at a rest stop. Thank God that worked because we desperately needed juice.

What My Family Loved About Our Electric SUV Experience
Despite the charging drama, my family fell in love with this three-row SUV:
The Kids Were Obsessed: My daughters loved the spacious interior and those conveniently placed USB-C chargers tucked behind the headrests. So well-placed and inconspicuous! My 5-year-old was fascinated by the plaid interior design, though my husband wasn’t as convinced.

Storage for Days: From the trunk to the frunk, both with hidden deeper compartments, there’s incredible storage. Even with the third row up, we had space for everything.
Mom-Friendly Features: Individual child lock controls for rear doors? Game changer. My 5-year-old wants independence but isn’t quite ready for full door control. The vents in the second and third rows kept everyone comfortable, and those impeccable cameras made parking stress-free.
Long Island Highway Hero: The acceleration was perfect for safely merging onto Long Island’s notoriously short on-ramps.
Minimalist Luxury: The clean interior with everything tucked away was gorgeous, though it took us two days to find the cupholders and a spot for sunglasses!

Game Changer: Rivian’s New Hamptons Location
Just as my test week ended, Rivian announced something that addresses every infrastructure concern I experienced on Long Island: their first East Coast Charging Outpost opening in Southampton.

This isn’t just another charging spot in the Hamptons. Housed in a classic cedar shingle building that perfectly captures coastal vibes, it features six fast chargers (including trailer-friendly pull-through options) available 24/7 to all EVs, not just Rivians.

But here’s what makes it special for families: complimentary coffee, curated snacks, an outdoor kids’ play area with a sandpit, and an indoor reading nook. The last time we drove to Montauk, it poured so badly we barely enjoyed the trip. Having a beautiful space like this would have been a complete game-changer.

Why This Matters for Real Families Considering Electric
Home vs. Road Trip Charging Reality: If you have a home charger, you’re golden. Just plug in overnight and wake up ready. But family road trips? That’s where infrastructure becomes everything.
Range Anxiety is Real: Proper charging infrastructure makes electric ownership realistic for busy moms who can’t afford to waste time hunting for working chargers. Places like Rivian’s new outpost help ease that psychological burden.
Weekend Warrior Families: For Long Island and NYC parents doing weekend Hamptons runs, reliable charging transforms electric from “maybe someday” to “absolutely doable.”

The Beauty in the Bump: Finding Luxury in the Journey
Here’s how I’d like to reframe the experience: what if charging time became a time for self-care? Picture sipping coffee while kids play safely nearby, everyone taking a breath from the road. We’re so conditioned to rush that we forget journeys can be experiences too.
This connects to sustainable travel education for our kids. Beautiful spaces like Rivian’s outpost show them that caring for the environment doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort or fun. It means slowing down intentionally and finding beauty in unexpected places.
The “bump” philosophy applies perfectly here: charging challenges become opportunities to rest, connect, and explore. Instead of “charging stops,” they’re “experience stops.”

The Future is Electric (And Getting More Convenient)
Rivian shared that they’ve introduced a Google Maps integration update that addresses the navigation issues I experienced. Not only is navigation enhanced, but it maintains specialized functionality around range estimates and charging stop selection.
This kind of rapid improvement gives me hope. When companies listen to real user feedback and respond quickly, it signals readiness for mainstream adoption by busy parents.
Infrastructure expansion like the Hamptons outpost (their 121st Adventure Network site and 15th in the Northeast) shows commitment beyond just selling cars. They’re building an ecosystem that supports real family life, not just marketing brochures.
My Honest Take: Are Families Ready for Electric?
After a week with the R1S, I’m cautiously optimistic. The vehicle itself? Incredible. My kids preferred it to my current MDX. The luxury, space, and tech impressed everyone.
The infrastructure? Still catching up, but improving rapidly. Having that Google Maps update ready right after my test week shows they’re serious about solving real problems.
For families like mine who don’t have home charging yet, public infrastructure remains the biggest hurdle. However, spaces like the Hamptons outpost point toward a future where electric road trips become as convenient as those powered by gas.
I can’t wait to test that new navigation system on another road trip. The combination of better software and thoughtfully designed charging spaces might just be the tipping point that makes electric vehicles viable for mainstream families.

Ready to Make the Switch?
Rivian’s network expansion and infrastructure improvements address my biggest concerns about electric family travel. Range anxiety becomes manageable when you know exactly where working chargers are and can turn charging time into family time.
