There’s something magical about experiencing a place for the first time, especially when it’s been a cherished destination for the people you love most. Walking through those gates at Adventureland Long Island with my family, I finally understood why my husband and 14-year-old had been raving about this place for years.

As a mom who’s always looking for that sweet spot between family fun and practical spending, I’ll be honest, I was curious but cautious. Would this Long Island institution live up to the hype? Could it create new memories while honoring the nostalgia my family already felt? Spoiler alert: it absolutely delivered, and here’s everything you need to know before planning your own adventure.

Getting There: The Real Talk on Location and Logistics

Adventureland is located at 2245 Broadhollow Road in Farmingdale, Suffolk County, approximately 11 miles from our home, but it feels much longer due to Friday afternoon traffic. We left around 3:30 PM and hit that perfect storm of people leaving work and heading to the Hamptons for the weekend. Note to self: timing matters.

Pro tip from someone who learned the hard way: Don’t park at the first entrance like we did. That’s for people who already have wristbands. We ended up with an unnecessary trek to the main gate, dragging two kids who were already buzzing with excitement. The silver lining is that I did get my steps in.

But let’s talk about what went right. Parking was a breeze once we figured out where we were supposed to be. And thanks to Adventureland’s generous invite, we arrived with comped tickets and a swag bag that had my kids’ eyes lighting up: $33 in event dollars for our family of four, arcade cards we never got around to using (more on that later), and Mystery Mansion pins.

First Impressions: When Nostalgia Meets New Eyes

Here’s the thing about being first-timers alongside my husband and 14-year-old, who had been there before, my youngest and I were discovering everything together. At the same time, they pointed out “remember when” moments. The park isn’t massive, which I actually liked. Sometimes smaller means more manageable, especially when you’re juggling a 5-year-old’s energy and a teenager’s expectations.

My youngest immediately spotted Turbulence, the park’s signature roller coaster, and the mysterious-looking Mystery Mansion. The disappointment on her face when she wasn’t tall enough for either? That’s a universal mom moment right there. Meanwhile, my 14-year-old was already smiling at memories I wasn’t part of yet, but was about to make my own.

The Rides That Made (and Broke) Our Day

For My 5-Year-Old Adventure Seeker

Little Dipper became an instant hit—nothing like a little splash to kick off the fun. The Sports Tower, Merry-Go-Round, and those spinning Tea Cups had her absolutely mesmerized. And when I say she rode the tea cups four times, I mean I got progressively more nauseous with each spin. The fourth time? She went solo while I recovered on a bench, questioning my core strength.

Alfie’s Swings earned a repeat performance, and Pirate Ship had her stepping off with that pure joy only kids can express: “That was AMAZING, Mommy!” Alfie’s Express, the little train that could, rounded out her favorites perfectly.

For My Teenager

My 14-year-old gravitated toward Rescue Boats, Turbulence, Surf’s Up, and FireBall. But here’s the real tea: midway through our visit, she texted me (while we were literally in the same park): “Great Adventure is so much better.”

I had to remind her that comparing a regional park to a major theme park isn’t exactly fair. She claimed the rides were “anti-climactic,” but my youngest and I absolutely heard her screaming on Fireball while waiting for Alfie’s Express. Sometimes, teenage cool doesn’t quite mask genuine fun.

The One That Got Away

Wave Twister Spinning Coaster was closed during our visit, which honestly felt like a missed opportunity. We’re hoping to make it back before the season ends to experience what everyone says is a game-changer.

Entertainment Worth Your Time

The entertainment lineup is impressive. Not Ms. Rachel Show (June 28, July 12, and 26 at 1 PM, 2 PM, and 3 PM) is new this season and perfect for families with younger kids. Royal Event’s Princess Parties happen every Thursday from 12:30-5:30 PM, featuring sing-alongs and photo ops that would have made my 5-year-old’s entire summer.

Team Fun brings jugglers and walking entertainers on Fridays (12-3 PM) and Saturdays (5-8 PM), while Amazing Louie’s Magic Show runs every Sunday at 2 PM, 3:30 PM, and 6:30 PM. The variety ensures there’s always something happening beyond the rides.

The Real Cost Breakdown

Let’s talk money because that’s what we’re all thinking about. Those $33 event dollars? They went faster than my 5-year-old on the Tea Cups. $12 for one game, allowing both girls to play, $11 for cotton candy (thanks to Mexico City, which brought back memories of my youngest’s deep love for the treat), and a reusable slush cup for $20.99, which comes with free refills throughout the 2025 season on soft drinks and icees.

The math: we spent our $33 event dollars plus about $38 of our own money. And naturally, my youngest wanted her own slush, so my husband bought another one at $20.99 each, though we later learned they’re $19.99 each when you buy two. Pro tip we wish we’d known! Budget accordingly, friends.

Kid Verdict: The Moments That Mattered

This was my 5-year-old’s first real amusement park experience, and watching her face light up with each new ride reminded me why these investments in family time are so important. She wanted to go back immediately and asked for “just one more ride” on everything.

My teenager was ready to leave earlier than expected, but my husband convinced her to do one final ride on Turbulence together. That shared moment of genuine enjoyment was worth it.

We grabbed dinner at Five Guys (you have to exit the park, but re-entry is seamless), then returned for our final rides. My youngest squeezed in the Merry Go Round and Tea Cups again, plus another round on Alfie’s Swings.

The Beauty in the Bump

Sometimes the most beautiful moments happen when we least expect them. Watching my 5-year-old experience pure joy spinning solo on the tea cups, seeing my teenager let her guard down just enough to scream with delight on FireBall, and feeling my own sense of wonder at a place that’s been creating memories for Long Island families for decades; these are the bumps along our journey that remind us why we prioritize experiences over things.

The beauty wasn’t just in the perfectly orchestrated day or the comped tickets. It was in my youngest’s determination to ride the tea cups alone, in my husband and teenager bonding over Turbulence, and in my own realization that sometimes the best family adventures are hiding in plain sight, just 11 miles from home.
