1. I Had a Subchorionic Hematoma

A subchorionic hematoma is when there is a bleed between the uterus and chorion (under the placenta). My RE stated that at least 50% of her patients have them and go on to have healthy pregnancies. I was just placed on pelvic rest until it passed.

2. I was in the ER at 9 Weeks

After coming home from taking my daughter to her swimming lesson, I experienced bleeding. Bleeding anytime during pregnancy is scary, especially if you’ve experienced losses as I have. Even though I know there isn’t much that can be done if the bleeding is due to an impending miscarriage, I still went ahead to the ER to make sure everything was okay. And, it was. The baby was moving and had a strong heartbeat, and the bleeding eventually stopped. It seems like the bleed was caused by the Subchorionic Hematoma passing. Regardless, it was scary!

3. I was Diagnosed with a Short Cervix

Even though I didn’t express it much, this pregnancy was far from uneventful. At sixteen weeks, during my first appointment with the Maternal-Fetal Specialist, I was diagnosed with a short cervix. My cervix was measuring under 3 cm, which was a cause for concern since I could go into preterm labor. That wasn’t something we wanted to experience at all! My doctor prescribed me progesterone suppositories, and I was subjected to transvaginal ultrasounds on a bi-weekly basis.

4. I was Prescribed Progesterone Suppositories

Since I did IVF I had to take both intramuscular injections of progesterone and vaginal suppositories until I reached 10 weeks pregnant. However, since my cervix was short, I had to resume taking progesterone (Prometrium) suppositories until week 36. It isn’t fun and it is messy!

5. I was Placed on Modified Bed Rest

The bi-weekly transvaginal sonograms showed that my cervix state wasn’t really improving much, so my OB/GYN placed me on modified bed rest. This was done to prevent me from going into preterm labor. So far, so good! I’m almost at the end of my pregnancy and the baby is still growing strong.
