The evening after our
Mother’s Day brunch was over, my husband revealed that we were going somewhere
the next morning (Mother’s Day) that was either 90-minutes or 4 hours away.
I had a choice, but, since I’m indecisive, I asked him to surprise me so
he chose the longer trip.
Meanwhile, I wondered where
on Earth could we possibly go that would also accommodate our 4-year-old
daughter.  “Back to D.C.?” I thought, but nope! We ended up driving to a
place that was on both of our bucket lists – Ommegang Brewery in Cooperstown,
NY.  Funny thing is I was planning on taking my husband there for Father’s
Day so now I have to come up with another idea.
Taking the road trip
Upstate New York to Cooperstown was perfect, as I love doing things out of the
ordinary.  Sure, my husband could have taken me to brunch at a local
restaurant, but this, in my opinion, was even better!  Ommegang Brewery is
home to a few of our favorite beers, has a restaurant onsite, and is located on
beautiful, green grounds.

The day was beautiful! During
our drive to Ommegang, we enjoyed seeing the foliage, the farmlands, and
various animals.  Mini me’s favorite
parts of the trip were seeing the farmhouses and cows.  At one point, she even began singing “Old
McDonald had a Farm”.  It was cute!
While at Ommegang Brewery,
we decided to first eat.  The drive made
us hungry, and thirsty.  I love mussels
so it was only right for me to get their Moulles that was cooked in a basil
cream pesto sauce cooked with Witte with which I washed down with a Belgian dubbel brown ale by Maredsous.  My
husband, on the other hand, had their amazing Chicken and Waffle dish that
consisted of a fried chicken breast on a Liege waffle with vanilla pepper gravy
and strawberry jam.  Amazing! His beverage of choice was a Belgian Brown Ale by Mc Chouffe Mini me had
macaroni and cheese, which was really good, too.  Everything was surprisingly good.  For some reason, I didn’t expect to eat good
or even great food at a brewery.  And, of
course, they had an extensive list of craft beers available both on tap and in
the bottle.
After we ate, we did a tour
of the brewery, in which the guide went over the brewing, fermenting, bottling,
and shipping processes. The tour wasn’t at all long; it lasted approximately
15-20 minutes.  Afterwards, we did the
tasting, which, of course was my favorite part.
During the tasting, we were
allowed to taste six Ommegang beers: IPA, Rare Voss, Abbey Ale, Three
Philosophers, and Hennepin. Through the tasting, we’ve found two new favorites:
Abbey Ale and Rare Voss.
Overall, visiting Ommegang
Brewery in Cooperstown, NY was a cool experience.  We enjoyed taking in the sites, the food, and
spending time together as a family.  We
can’t wait to knock off a few more of our other favorite breweries off of our
bucket lists.  Since mini me did so well
during this trip, we envision many more road trips in the near future.
